I was flipping through a New Yorker in a waiting room last week and saw a cartoon that looked very familiar. This one had a disheveled guy about to give a talk to an audience and the caption said ‘Our next speaker looked into the abyss and made a few notes’.

More than four years ago we posted the following cartoon. It’s not exactly the same, but there’s certainly some similarities—disheveled guy, talking to a journalist, saying he had looked into the void.

Both of these play on the Nietzsche quote so I certainly don’t think there’s any original idea here that was copied. It is another example though of an idea we’ve had showing up in print somewhere else. Take that, 12 New Yorker rejection letters!
